In this London, the vampires are truly dangerous, very creepy, and will kill everyone you love in unpleasant ways. ![]() ![]() Powers is witty and sarcastic and really very funny in places, but even the faintly ridiculous sounding ideas have a sense of real peril and darkness behind them. I hope you weren’t put off by the aforementioned saucepan – trust me, it isn’t half as silly as it sounds. You’re pretty much shoved into this grimy, vamp-ridden London and suddenly everyone is talking about little black statues and invisible saucepans in the Alps and ghosts in the form of sea creatures in the Thames – it helps to have some grounding in this mad bad world beforehand.īut man, where do I start with this beauty of a novel?Įverything about it, and I mean everything, is just so well grounded. Reason being, this is a book about 1850s London, with vampires, spiritualism, science and historical figures. ![]() Ok, so first off, Hide Me Among the Graves is a sequel to Powers’ 1989 novel, and although it’s not absolutely necessary to read Stress first, I would strongly recommend it. ![]()
